Environment Is Everything: The One Factor That Determines Your Success

By Ferny Ceballos · January 2024 · 7 min read

I want to tell you about three completely different things I've achieved in my life — and the one factor that made all of them possible.

First: I grew up poor in East LA, without a computer, and somehow made it to MIT. Second: I built a seven-figure online business after struggling for years in network marketing. Third: I became a martial arts world champion in my 30s, despite having no athletic background.

Different domains. Different skills. Different challenges. But the same principle made all three possible: environment.

"You don't rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your environment. This is the most important thing I've ever learned."

The MIT Story

I didn't get into MIT because I was smarter than the kids who didn't. I got in because I was in an environment — a school, a family, a community — that held me to a higher standard. That environment shaped my beliefs about what was possible for me.

And when I got to MIT, the environment changed me again. Being surrounded by brilliant, ambitious people rewired my beliefs about what I was capable of. I went in as a timid kid who barely spoke. I came out believing I could conquer the world.

The Business Story

I struggled in network marketing for years — until I invested $60,000 in a mentorship program that put me in a completely different environment. Not just better tactics or strategies, but a community of high performers, a mentor who had already done what I wanted to do, and a culture of accountability and excellence.

Nine months later, I had a $500,000 month. The tactics hadn't changed that much. The environment had.

The Martial Arts Story

I started practicing Hwa Rang Do in my early 30s. I had no athletic background. But I had a teacher — Master Taejoon Lee — who created an environment where you had no choice but to become a champion. He forced me to exhibit the behaviors of a champion long before I felt like one.

Eventually, the behaviors became beliefs, and the beliefs became results. I won a gold medal at a major world tournament.

What This Means for You

If you're struggling in your business, I want you to ask yourself: what is my environment demanding of me? Are the people around you holding you to a high standard? Do you have mentors who have already done what you want to do? Are you surrounded by people who are achieving what you want to achieve?

If the answer to any of those questions is no, that's your problem. Not your tactics. Not your mindset. Not your work ethic. Your environment.

Change your environment, and everything else changes with it.
